"We're on our way, Sir." Keith hung up the phone. He looked over to Lance.
"Let's go. Marshall Graham wants to see us."
Lance glanced
towards Sven's room.
"Think he'll be all right to leave here alone for
awhile?"
"He's pretty out of it, I think so, but just in case."
Keith left the apartment and went across the hall to the apartment next
door. He knocked and waited for an answer. It was Hunk who answered the door.
"Hi Keith, what can I do for you tonight?"
"Look, Sven's not
feeling good and we gotta go out for a little while. He's in his room asleep
with the door closed. He shouldn't need anything or wake up but we just don't
want him to be in the place alone."
"Sure, not a problem." Hunk closed
the door and went across the hall and into their apartment.
With the
safe fact that Hunk would let them know if anything happened, they went to
Marshall Graham's office. He beckoned them in.
"Please, sit down." When
the boys had made themselves comfortable Marshall graham opened a file.
"I have some very disturbing news boys. It didn't take me long to pull
the file on this Dr.Kirklande. How Sven managed to get him for a doctor, I don't
know. That we must find out. Seven different patients are currently suing this
Kirklande.
"It appears that he diagnosed his patients with either fake
or curable diseases and giving them, what they thought, were medicines but
basically he was using them for guinea pigs and he was doing the same to Sven.
For what reasons he was doing this have not been disclosed, the only reason it
was discovered that a couple of patients went to another doctor when Kirklande
was out of town and it was discovered that their medicines were not right or not
needed."
Keith and Lance looked at each other, stunned looks on their
faces.
"Look, we know Sven can be as dumb as a post but I don't think
he'd be stupid enough to actually go along with something like that."
"Apparently he did. I won't say that Sven is a dumb kid, because no one
is dumb. He just might not have caught on; he might have been frightened by what
the doctor told him. Telling someone that they may lose their leg to an
infection can be pretty scary, I don't care who you are, and you would be
willing to jump at any kind of medication to keep from losing it regardless of
what it is.
"Sven may not have had the foresight to look up the
medication in the medical library to see what the uses were for. I had a very
severe allergic reaction to a medication when I was a child and after that I
have always looked up things since then.
"Not many people do look meds
up but I think it would be a good idea if everyone did. But this has been going
on for a month or so. The meds he was on have nothing to do with an infection
but the question before us is how we are going to get him off these meds and
treat him for what is really wrong with him, if anything is wrong.
"Do
you boys think you can get him to the campus hospital? I can get the doctors to
give him a through examination."
"That shouldn't be a problem." Lance
replied, "I don't think he'll be waking up any time soon. We'll just pack him up
in the car and bring him in."
"Good. Once we get a full blood work up we
can begin to treat him properly. As I said before, boys, this does not go beyond
the three of us."
"Understood." They both whispered.
They left
quietly, each lost in their own thoughts as they walked back to the dorm. Hunk
reported that there had not been a peep out of Sven. After he left they wrapped
Sven in a heavy blanket and put him in the back of Lance's car.
It was
only a jump to the campus hospital but neither wanted to try and carry Sven
there.
They sat in the waiting room while the doctors conducted their
tests on Sven. They were glad that Sven hadn't woken up for them.
It
seemed like an eternity before the doctor told them that they had completed
their tests and that Sven was sleeping comfortably. Lance went to sit beside
Sven; he lightly touched Sven's hand.
"Where did you go wrong? What made
you think that this was so terrible that you couldn't come to Keith or me? We've
always been so close. You and I have known each other since we were kids. You've
helped me through a lot. If anyone should be in that bed, it's me.
"You've pulled me out of a lot of rotten things and helped me to care
about life and to make the right choices. You've stuck by me and that means a
lot. I don't regret anything we've done together.
"After my dad got hurt
and couldn't work, I'll never be able to pay back the kindness you and your mom
showed until we could get back on our feet. I tried to get into drugs and things
like that but you kept me out of that and I'll always be thankful for that.
"I think what the turning point in my life, that kept me from flushing
my life down the drain was the night in your room, the night that mom got boozed
out of her mind and took a freak attack. She smashed everything she could lay
her hands on, including me.
"I was really scared, that was the first
time I had seen her that bad and that vicious. I looked out my bedroom window
and saw you in yours, I knew where I had to go.
"Your room was a
sanctuary to me, I sat and I cried and you held me close and sang songs to me,
lullabies and they really helped. More than you'll ever know how you saved me
that night with those songs. Just plain, simple songs."
"Now the tables
have turned and I am here to say that I am beside you no matter what. I will
never leave. I stood beside you when you got up the guts to go to your mom about
your dad hitting you. You stood beside me, when mom tried to smack me around
when she got too much booze into her after dad got hurt.
"Neither one of
us have had the good life but we stuck together and came though. Neither one of
us were rich or and everything handed to us like a lot of the kids here did but
that didn't matter to either one of us. I know about what is being said about
us, that I am better than you; I shouldn't be hanging out with someone who can
drag me down. But I don't listen to them. I don't hear them. So what if I do
better in my classes, I don't care. I help you when I can. I don't see why the
teachers have to be up your ass all the time about things you can't help.
"I have said it before to them and I will say it again, you are someone
who needs individual training. I know it's been done with other students, I know
you have to pay extra fees for it but I know it would do you a world of good,
even if you could only pay the fees a little at a time instead of all up front.
"We'll make it Sven, you and me, regardless of the outcome. We'll
achieve our goals no matter how long it takes. You are the greatest friend in
the whole wide world, I love you so much for standing by me, and being there for
me no matter I'm sorry. You gotta come back to me so we can get this whole mess
straightened out and behind us. Please Sven, don't do this to me.
"I
want you to be at my wedding as my best man when and if I decide to marry, I
want you to be my child's godfather when I have them. Don't leave me now. I know
I'm being overly dramatic but you get me so upset at times I don't know what to
do."
Lance gave a little laugh,
"Make a great actor, don't you
think? I just hope nobody heard that spew of horse shit I just let out. But,
hey, Sven, you know what I mean, you know what I'm talking about even if I pour
the melodrama on a little thick."
Lance looked close at Sven as he
slowly opened his eyes and smiled as best he could.
"Lance, I've always
loved you."
